All freight forwarders have trading conditions explaining their liability in the case of any incidents occurring to a shipment
that may give rise to a claim. Most conditions limit the company's liability by
weight meaning the claimant often will not receive settlement in full for all
claim costs. Settlements are worked out by SDR's (Special Drawing Rights) per
kilo with many companies trading under BIFA which give a rate of 2 SDR's per
kilo, this converts to around £2.13 per kilo.
If you are unaware of this limitation, it can be a real shock when you find you
are offered a much smaller settlement than expected.
It's for this reason that we recommend our customers take out Marine Cargo
Insurance so that should the unexpected occur, you can be in the safe knowledge
that you will receive full recovery of any loss made.
